Ri Sanpei Dragon Arita Guinomi Sake Cup
Adorned with a whimsical dragon design, this guinomi sake cup from the Ri Sanpei Kiln, pioneers of Arita ware, is perfect for enjoying Japanese sake, providing a comfortable grip for sipping. Beyond its use as a sake cup, this versatile piece can also serve beautifully as a small tea cup or a condiment holder.
The dragon, an auspicious symbol, is revered as a water and sea deity, representing nature’s dynamic forces like tornadoes and thunderstorms. Its appearance is believed to herald forthcoming good fortune.
Made from 100% Izumiyama porcelain ore, the clay used at Ri Sanpei Kiln recreates the charm of early Imari ware. The soft hues of the natural glaze and blue underglaze express a simple, rustic beauty.
In the early 17th century, Korean craftsman Yi Sam-pyeong, known as Ri Sanpei in Japanese, discovered porcelain ore in Izumiyama, Arita, leading to the creation of Japan’s oldest porcelain, Arita ware. Today, the 14th-generation Yi Sam-pyeong continues this legacy, crafting pieces with a unique style of simplicity with a wabi-sabi aesthetic.
Please note that there may be slight differences as all pieces are formed by potter’s wheel and hand-painted.
